Health and mobility concerns can make independent living at home more challenging as people age. However, not everyone can afford a nursing home or an assisted living facility, and not everyone wants to relocate there.
Most seniors 50 and older prefer to live in their homes for as long as possible. However they must make changes to their current residence in order to do so for themselves or a loved one.
Unfortunately, major home improvements, such as adding an elevator within a property, can be prohibitively expensive. Additionally, even straightforward upgrades like adding a chair lift or switching to a walk-in bathtub may come with a heftier price tag. However, the good news is that there are less expensive upgrades you may consider that can enable a loved one of yours to age in place.
Here are a few ideas that could make a significant difference without costing a fortune.

LIGHTING
People frequently develop eyesight problems as they age. Unfortunately, injuries and falls could result from that. Improved illumination can make a big difference.
Implementing intelligent lighting and technology that enables lights to turn on automatically when you enter a room can result in fewer accidents overall but especially helpful at night.

HANDRAIL BARS
Stability bars are excellent in helping seniors keep their balance. Use them in bathroom, the kitchen, the bedroom etc. Place anywhere a helping hand can prevent a fall.

INSTALL NON-SKID FLOORMATS
Placing the mats in key areas like the bathrooms and kitchen.
Non-slip mats are an excellent option for rooms in the house where carpeting doesn’t work well. If areas with hardood flooring you might consider covering them with carpet.

ADDING A SHOWER SEAT
Soap and water can cause slippery surfaces and are dangerous for elderly people who have balance issues. Installing a shower bench makes a lot of sense in light of this.
Instead of standing up when taking a shower, one can bathe while seated. This helps prevent falls and injuries.

SAFEGAUARD CURRENT HOME FIXTURES

People want to age in place but as they get older, they cannot maintain their homes as well as they should, primarily because they aren’t physically able to conduct routine maintenance. Proper security of a residence is crucial in achieving a safer home environment.
